Chapter 14

Jane perched on the kitchen counter with her hand under the sink’s running water. She winced and whined as Nate did his best to distract her from the pain. Then he cleaned her wound with a kitchen rag that looked more expensive than anything in her wardrobe.

His fingers squeezed her hand gently, making butterflies flutter around in her stomach.

He gazed up at her from under his dark lashes. “It doesn’t look too deep,” he said.

“What’re you, a doctor?” she teased.

He ripped open a big square bandage that he found while rooting through one of the upstairs bathrooms and applied it to her palm, explaining that his dad had been an EMT for a number of years before the stress burned him out. Then he took a lousy office job in the city and moved the family out to Morganville where the property tax was cheaper.

“That’s how I learned first aid,” he said.

“Cool,” said Jane.

He smiled, looking away. “I was feeling bad about crashing your babysitting thing,” he said, “but now that I know you needed me to rescue you again—”

Jane raised her eyebrows. “Excuse me? Again?”

He let go of her hand to wring out the cloth. “Yeah, again. The Beast, remember?”

Only too well. She sighed. “Okay, but how did you know I was here?”

He pulled out his phone and showed her their text exchange. Her face heated up as she realized her last two panicked messages to Lily had gone to Nate by mistake.

What do you do when the fuckin’ brats won’t sleep?

Nate: Who?

Harker kids! They’re the worst! I’m gonna MURDER THEM!

Jane buried her face in the crook of her elbow. “You didn’t think I was actually going to murder them, did you?”

He shrugged. “Naw, but I knew who you were talking about. My mom is ‘Miss Social Committee.’ The second we moved in, she was up and down the block introducing herself.”

“Sounds … embarrassing?”

“It was, but that’s how we met the Harkers and how I knew where to find you.”

Jane held her throbbing, bandaged hand against her chest. “Well, I’m fine,” she said curtly. She wanted to tell him to go away, that she wasn’t flattered that he came to check on her, that he wasn’t the cutest boy who had ever paid her any attention. That because Lily liked him first, she was a terrible friend for seeing him behind her back.

But then he leaned in with a grin, tilting his head up to kiss her. She closed her eyes and leaned in, complicit in their affair. His lips were warm and smooth. She blushed, a shiver running through her bones.

Nate parted and touched her arm. “You okay? Want my coat?”

She shook her head. “No, it’s—” She decided to tell him the truth. Let him know about Lily’s feelings and break it to him gently that they shouldn’t be together.

Instead, the three little monsters she was supposed to be watching started screaming like they were on fire.

Jane jumped down from the counter, pushing Nate aside. I’m gonna fucking kill them—

“What was that?” Nate asked.
